City votes to sue Pechanga Band of gaming impact agreement

The city council in Temecula, California, voted to sue the Pechanga Band of LuiseƱo Indians over a gaming agreement.

The deal requires the tribe to pay $2 million a year to Temecula for five years, with subsequent payments to be adjusted for inflation. The first year's payment is on hold while the tribe finalizes an agreement with Riverside County but city officials apparently don't want to wait.

"At a time when real leaders work together to solve problems, the Temecula City Council chooses a path of conflict, litigation, and uncertainty," Chairman Mark Macarro said in a statement, The Riverside Press-Enterprise reported.

The tribe's Class III compact requires the tribe to address local impacts of the casino.
